A favourite past time....reading

I started reading EAT PRAY LOVE earlier last year but didn't really get into it, so I put it down. Actually I gave it to Bron, my sister in law to read. Last weekend she returned it as I mentioned to her that I wanted to try it again. Well, last night I sat down after a long day and started again, so far so good, I have made it further into the book than the original time. I will keep you posted on how I go!

I don't usually enjoy books that everyone else is in a craze about. For example I didn't like "A thousand splendid suns", in fact I thought it was not enjoyable at all. I read for enjoyment and that to me was torture. Don't get me wrong, I understand that the happenings of the above mentioned novel happen and we need to understand we don't all have charmed lucky lives but I don't feel the need to read about it for pleasure. I hope that makes sense.

I do enjoy a good biography and actually recently on a program on the ABC there was a story about Janine Shepherd who overcame great odds of being told she would never walk again to actually walking again and learning to fly and then went on to have three children. I have read three of her novels and after seeing the documentary I decided I need to delve into my book boxes later this weekend and find these books so I can reread these. She is a true inspiration and full of courage, hope and determination.

I think we all need a little bit of inspiration, hope and determination in our own lives....and to be reminded each day that what we have in life is truly beautiful and should be cherished in the heart.

On that happy note, I love a good chick book too!! I am off to delve into "Eat Pray Love", happy reading! What sort of books do you enjoy and why do you read?

  1. I am eclectic. I read non fiction adventures to fiction epics, crime, romance and drama. I must admit over summer at the beach I love a bit of pulp fiction something easy. I am a lover of books though. Charmaine

  2. I love that you give something a go but then don't persist if it's not for you. I've always done this with movies [life's too short to be subjected to something that doesn't interest me] and have started to do so with books also.

There's interesting synchronicity in your posting as I've just finished reading 'Eat, Pray, Love' for the third time.
Now before you write me off as some kind of freak, let me clarify.
The first time was special because it was given to me by the sister of my ex not long after we had split up [canceling our holiday to Bali in the process], that was four years ago.
I then read it again last year when I was going through some 'stuff' and found that the messages that I took from it were entirely different to the first reading.
Then, as mentioned I read it again last week. This was sparked by viewing the film [which was ok but more of an aesthetic travel-fest vs good story] and again, I've enjoyed the messages.

I"d be interested to learn whether or not you do make it through this time and whether or not it was a book you did 'get in to'.

PS I also loved Janine Shepard's biography and would say that biographies in general take the lion's share of my bookshelves.

  3. I only got a little way into 'India' and then just found the whole thing self-indulgent and boring. I went and saw the movie and that hasn't changed my mind a jot. It sits on my shelf, but I doubt I'll ever finish it... I really, really enjoyed her book about "The Last American Man". That was fab.

Thanks for linking today. Don't forget to link back to me if you can! x

  4. I'm just reading a lovely book by Antonia Fraser about her relationship with Harold Pinter called "Must you go?" I love biographies and autobiographies.

  5. Just a quick note, thank you lovely ladies for your notes above! You made my day!
I am a quarter of the way through the first part of EAT PRAY LOVE, I am doing so much better this time around! Funny how you have to be in the "right" frame of mind to actually read and enjoy particular books! Thanks again! Happy Sunday!
